Welcome to Schrödinger’s Café — a place where reality flickers, genres collide, and nothing is quite what it seems.

Sector 13 Comics is seeking imaginative comic stories that live at the intersection of science fiction and fantasy, drama and humour, science, and philosophy for their newest title.

 Schrodinger’s Cafe is a space for creators who want to experiment, subvert expectations, and push boundaries.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

We want work inspired by

• The irreverent spirit of the New Wave of science fiction and fantasy of the sixties to seventies, Dangerous Visions, New Worlds.
• Hard Science Fiction based on up-to-date science.
• The experimentation of comics like Metal Hurlant, ‘The Studio,’ and the underground outsiders of the comic world.
• Psychedelic, surreal, and speculative storytelling
• Satirical, absurdist, or dark humour
• Anything that surprises us.
• All within the boundaries of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative fiction

We seek stories that feel strange, intelligent, and alive, or that exist at the edge of science or philosophy. Think:

• Reality-bending and breaking.
• Cosmic jokes and existential punchlines
• Anti-heroes, unreliable narrators, and impossible situations
• Stories that surprise us formally, visually, or narratively

Channel the energy of boundary-pushers and literary rebels. Take risks. Be weird. Be sharp. Be inventive.

TONE & THEMES:

• Sci-fi, fantasy, and hybrids
• Humour ranging from subtle to outrageous.
• Philosophical, political, or surreal undercurrents are encouraged.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

We will be accepting submissions from writers, artists, and writer/artist teams. 

Writers

• Scripts up to a max of 20 pages (1-10 preferred)
• Stories conceived for any format that uses graphics to tell a story. From wordless comics to heavily illustrated prose or poetry, and everything in between. So long as art or graphics play an essential part in the storytelling.
• We are open to full scripts, outlines, short pitches, or conversations.
• We especially like submissions from first-time writers with stories they want help with to turn into comics.

Artists*

• Artists should send samples of their sequential work, with notes on preferences for genre, but should be prepared for us to subvert those preferences in allocating scripts.
• Ideas for storytelling formats, or script ideas that need input from an editor or writer.

Writer/Artist teams

• We will accept submissions or completed stories from writer/artist teams, but be aware that strips may be rejected because either the writing or art does not fit with our requirements.

Deadlines

• Scripts and artwork samples should be with us by 30^th September 2026. So, pitches and story ideas should be sent by August 30^th at the latest.

Payment

Payments will be nominal, with any profits from publication shared among contributors on a page-by-page basis. For very special stories from full-time writers or artists, we will be prepared to negotiate on up-front fees. Up to 50% of profits will be retained to help produce a second issue. Copyright on all stories remains with the creators.

FINAL NOTE: Schrödinger's Café exists in multiple states at once — serious and ridiculous, thoughtful, and chaotic. We’re looking for stories that embrace that contradiction.

Artwork Guidelines

Page Setup

Please size your pages for our A4 publication format. Avoid using standard American comic page proportions, as these will not match the final printed size.

• Final printed page size: A4, 210mm x 297mm

Non-Bleed Artwork

If your strip is not intended to print to the edge of the paper and should retain a white border, the artwork will be printed within an area measuring 193mm x 287mm.

• Quiet area: 5mm on the top, bottom, and outside edges
• Inner quiet area: 12mm on the inside edge, where the page folds into the gutter

These quiet areas are a printer’s requirement. They help ensure that important text or artwork is not lost because of paper movement during printing, trimming, or binding. The larger inner margin is needed because this book is expected to be around 100 pages and perfect bound.

Full-Bleed Artwork

If your artwork is designed to print to the edge of the paper, add a 3mm bleed area on all sides: top, bottom, left, and right.

• Full-bleed artwork size: 216mm x 303mm
• Keep text and important artwork away from quiet areas, even when using full bleed.
